Needling: to make your skin fresh

Needling

Unfortunately, many factors contribute to skin deterioration, from subjective ones, including poor lifestyle habits, especially poor nutrition, smoking and exposure to environmental elements to objective ones, such as the unstoppable passage of time.

For everyone, it may become necessary at some point in life to correct skin imperfections, particularly through facial biorevitalization. In this regard, aesthetic medicine has worked to find increasingly effective and technologically advanced solutions that ensure safety, speed, convenience and long-lasting results.

Among the many modern techniques to achieve real skin regeneration without overly invasive procedures, the method of needling plays an especially important role.

Needling: what it is?

The term needling (from the English word “needle”) refers to a modern technique for the revitalization and regeneration of the skin on the face and body, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin through the use of a special device. This is a special electric “pen” called Dermapen®, equipped with 12–36 disposable micro-needles that penetrate the skin in a controlled manner, at a speed of up to 25 times per second.

The treatment affects only a small area of dermis, without touching surrounding tissues. In this way, a healing process is initiated that stimulates collagen and elastin production, thanks to the body's own self-regenerative power.

The particularity of the Dermapen® lies in the fact that its micro-needles penetrate the skin vertically, significantly improving treatment efficacy and minimizing epidermal damage and discomfort for the patient. Its automatic vibration function also facilitates the absorption of any paired products (hyaluronic acid, PRP, vitamins, etc.). The depth and speed of the micro-perforations can be adjusted depending on the skin area and the type of problem to be treated.

The main applications of needling include:

General biorevitalization of the face: needling induces physiological cell renewal, stimulating collagen and elastin production. The skin benefits in terms of tone, radiance and elasticity.
Skin damage from aging: a real anti-aging treatment for face, neck and décolleté.
Wrinkles: produces a "lifting" effect, especially around the mouth and eyes.
Acne scars: needling therapy also has antiseptic and antibacterial effects.
Stretch marks: the production of fibroblasts (connective tissue cells) promotes the synthesis of new collagen, with an elasticizing effect that repairs and maintains skin firmness and tone.

Needling: combined with other treatments

The effectiveness of needling can be further enhanced when its stimulating action is combined with the administration of active ingredients in skin regeneration. In particular, the micro-needles of Dermapen® can deliver PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) to stimulate tissue growth factors.

Another highly effective and decisive combination is with the SEFFI technique (Superficial Enhanced Fluid Fat Injection), using adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs).

Needling: how it works?

As always, the patient first undergoes a thorough consultation to assess the issue, rule out contraindications and provide all relevant information.

Needling treatment

Thanks to its features, treatment with Dermapen® is not particularly painful, though in some cases, where the treated areas are more sensitive, a topical anesthetic cream may be used.

Once the active ingredient is added, the micro-injections begin, lasting on average 15–20 minutes. To achieve the best results, 3 to 4 sessions spaced 30–40 days apart are needed, allowing time for collagen to reform.

As for acne scars, the results are long-lasting, whereas anti-aging treatment should be repeated occasionally, since the skin’s aging process continues with the patient’s age. However, the results of facial biorevitalization are already visible after the first cycle of three sessions and continue to improve over the following months.

Needling: side effects and contraindications

The side effects of needling performed with modern equipment are minimal: slight skin redness for a few hours; in rarer cases, small edema or bruising that naturally resolves within a couple of days. At the end of the session, to minimize any visible effects of the micro-injections, a soothing ointment is applied immediately. In summer, the treated skin must be protected with high-SPF creams.

The patient can immediately resume normal social and work activities. Contraindications to treatment include pregnancy and individuals with poor wound healing, coagulation disorders, collagen diseases or active skin conditions.
